Arlene, the flamenco dancer
and choreograph

Shirley, the co-hostess and singer
Carol Betti

Music Section has been founded as a part of the UCLA Faculty Women's Club special interest groups. Our first meeting was October 15th 2014 -- well attended, high in enthusiasm, and with lots of fresh ideas. We started off dancing, socializing, planning the events, toasting :-) For (music) current calendar of events at UCLA, please check HAPPENINGS as well as the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music -- visit their Ethnomusicology, Music, and Musicology departments.
Our next Music Section Meeting is Wednesday, November 19, 1-3 PM. We will be exploring the American Sound with Michael Tilson Thomas (watch video "Music and Emotion Through the Time").

Copland's work was inspired by the streets of Brooklyn, by jazz, Jewish and Russian music, Yiddish music, blues, American folk music, latin rhythms, and more. We might try to sing "Long time ago," or "By the river," both arranged by A. C. Madonna and Arlene are preparing us gently to the Spanish dance and music (e.g., the bolero, the fandango, the sevillanas). How about The Nutcracker and the Spanish Dance (from Act II) -- all that coming NOVEMBER 19th 1-3 pm.

  1. The newly formed MUSIC SECTION of the UCLA FWC celebrates music traditions around the World. We invite ensembles from the UCLA's Ethnomusicology Department (Near East, the Balkans, India, Africa, jazz). As a group we will attend concerts, plays, dance, and other cultural programs. Several Section members are accomplished dancers, vocalists, and performers. More photos to come :-)
